The popularity of edibles has been growing for a long time. There is much more that can be done with cannabis than the stereotypical weed brownies. The question becomes, how does one make cannabis oil?

What is it about edibles that appeal to people? It has been proven that ingesting cannabis amplifies its effects. It tends to have stronger and longer-lasting effects, though it takes longer at first to start working.

When cannabis is infused into oil, it can be used in so many different ways. You can use cannabis oil in any recipe that calls for oil. This process is time-consuming, which causes some people to lose interest in it at first. Throughout this article, we have explained how to do it and shared some tips and tricks for making the process faster and the end product more enjoyable.

Generally, it’s better to start with a lower dose than what a smoker might normally consume. There is no way to know beforehand how potent the edible will end up being, as previously mentioned because edibles tend to be stronger. It is recommended to start with a lower dose and increase it accordingly.

First, select a specific oil as a base. You can only answer this based on your personal preferences, there is no right or wrong answer. For example, coconut oil can be infused the same way as vegetable oil. Infusing canola oil with various herbs would be ideal for baking, but not necessarily for the same reasons as infused coconut oil.

In order to make your own cannabis oil, you only need two ingredients: ground cannabis and whichever oil you prefer.

The following items are needed for cannabis oil:

  • The cheesecloth or strainer
  • a grinder
  • Double boilers, slow cookers, saucepans, whatever you have on hand

For beginners, the standard ratio of cannabis to oil is 1:1. To find the right ratio for your personal preference, may take a few batches.

When making your first batch, you might want to use a mild base, such as vegetable oil. As far as taste is concerned, this will give you a good idea of what to expect. The best ratio for flavor and potency requires some experimentation, some trial, and error, as with any type of cooking.

There will be several hours of infusion time no matter what vessel is used. The stovetop can be a pretty valuable piece of real estate for some, and a slow cooker or instant pot is likely to be more suitable. Infusion smell is also an important factor to consider. In the beginning, the smell will be quite mild, but after a few hours, the kitchen will be filled with an incredible aroma. That problem would be resolved by a slow cooker or instant pot with sealing lids.

THC is activated by decarboxylation, and it is necessary for the infusion to work. Heat needs to be low, 200 F to 220 F. If possible, monitor the oil temperature with a probe thermometer. Higher temperatures would cause the activated THC to scorch, which is not ideal. You should take extra care when using a saucepan, as scorching is much more likely.

CBD cooking steps:

  1. Prepare the cannabis by grinding it
  2. You can combine the oil and cannabis in the cooking device of your choice, and cook it at low temperatures (200 F-220F) for a few hours.
  • Slow Cooker/Crock Pot: Heat on low for 4–6 hours, stirring as necessary
  • Double Boiler: Boil on low for at least six hours and ideally eight, stirring occasionally
  • Saucepan: Heat at least 3 hours on low, stirring often so it doesn’t burn
  1. Drain and store the oil
  • Be sure not to squeeze the cheesecloth as you strain. By squeezing it, more chlorophyll is transferred into the oil

If there are leftovers, they can be thrown away or used in another dish.

You can refrigerate the oil if you want it to last longer, but it will last for approximately two months.

Reheating this oil should be done with caution. Don’t microwave it, and only heat it on low heat.

Are you ready to infuse?

Finally, if this is your first time trying edibles, you should take it easy. My goal is not to make people feel sick or experience a bad experience. Nevertheless, oils and edibles can be powerful and effective healing tools if you do them right.
